10 Questions with Nathalie, GES nursing assistant

For nearly 12 years, Nathalie has been one of the most steady and faithful employees at JiHM.

A quiet-spoken, fiercely devoted follower of Christ, Nathalie began at Grace Emmanuel School in May 2011 as a second grade teacher.

After teaching for 10 years, she transitioned to the nurse’s office in September 2021 to assist Marie Lyne, GES Nurse. Nathalie had studied nursing before becoming a teacher, and says she was eager to make the change to help reinforce the work being done in the nurse’s office.

“Nathalie is very wise,” said Marie Lyne. “She loves what she does and is very patient with the children. Sometimes I can’t get to work because of the gang roadblocks, but she always has the patience to listen to the kids.”

Nathalie’s family was forced to flee their house when gangs attacked her family’s neighborhood in Source Matelas on November 29. They currently are staying in Cabaret, just north of the school.

1. Can you describe a typical day on your job?

I always start the day in prayer. After that I receive kids that have health problems, take their information, and follow up with them.

2. How does your faith in Christ impact your work?

When I’m meeting with a child who has a problem, I pray, and I ask God to take care of whatever is beyond my capacity. The Holy Spirit fills me with the patience I need for my work.

Philippians 4:13 motivates me, because no matter what situation is in front of me, I can make it through, thanks to Christ who gives me strength and courage.

3. What has been the most exciting change at school since you started working here?

The biggest thing for me has been the construction of the school. We had been teaching under tents and there was lots of dust. On windy days, we always had to watch out so the tents didn’t fall on anyone’s head.

4. Have there been any moments you wanted to quit?

I’ve never wanted to quit. I love the work that I do.

5. Is there an achievement you are most proud of?

My biggest achievement is accepting Jesus, and after that it’s my family, my kids.

6. Who is in your family?

I have a beautiful Christian family. I’m married and we have 4 children. The oldest, a son, is in 12th grade, and the other three, all daughters, are in 10th grade, 6th grade, and 4th grade. We are a blessed family.

7. How was your family impacted by the November 29 attack?

The day of November 29 is a day that our family will never forget, because we could have died, but God gave us grace.

8. How have you seen God’s faithfulness in your life?

I could never explain the faithfulness of God, because it’s too great. Every day it’s renewed in my life and in my family.

9. Do you have people who deeply influence who you are and what you believe?

My mom was my mentor, but unfortunately, she died in October 2020. After that, my husband, Jeannot, always keeps me motivated.

10. How can we be praying for you?

Help me pray for God to restore Haiti, to continue to bless my family and hold us in His will.

Nathalie ended her interview with encouragement for JiHM’s sponsors. “I ask God to bless them, because we are all here for the children. JiHM does what many other organizations cannot do. It improves the lives of many young people.”
