Q & A with Derson, a Lighthouse Legacy student

The Lighthouse Legacy fund, officially named this spring, supports children and young adults who have transitioned out of a JiHM home, but who still need further assistance to complete their education.

The Lighthouse Legacy fund currently supports 3 young men in college, 2 in high school, and Gervens. Read on for a Q&A with Derson, currently finishing up his second year of seminary.

What are you studying in college and why?

I am studying theology at the Baptist Theological Seminary of Haiti, so I can know more about God, because the more I know, the better I can serve.

lighthouse-legacyWhere did you grow up?

I grew up in Source Matelas. My mom and dad died when I was 7 years old. I lived with my grandma until I was 14, when I moved in to the Beacon (JiHM’s home).

Who has had the biggest influence on your life?

My friend Altimae, who was an example for me because of how he loved God, led a life of prayer, and treated other people.

dersonHow has God used supporters of JiHM to form who you are today?

Jesus in Haiti Ministries provided a home for me, provided new friends who taught me English, and trained me in theology and ministry. They also provided for my high school education and have provided for two years of college.

How are you currently serving in your local church or community?

When I’m on break, I preach at Victory Bible Church, teach Sunday School, help lead youth group, and do visitations. While I’m at school, I volunteer at a church in Jacmel.

How do you hope to use your future career and leadership skills to help your community, church and country?

When people come to faith, their changed hearts will change my country

I want to serve full-time as a pastor at Victory Bible Church. I want to help people grow in the Word of God and develop spiritual gifts for the work of the church, so the church can grow in abundance and faith. When people come to faith, their changed hearts will change my country.

Do you have a prayer request?

Please pray for God to give me more wisdom so I can understand His Word, make good choices in difficult situations, and understand people better, and also pray for God to provide a good partner to accompany me in ministry.
