Hurricane Season is Here
Dear friends,
Tomorrow morning, our first hurricane/storm moves past Haiti so we will be getting wet. This storm won't be real bad they say but Thursday's storm/hurricane is supposed to be much stronger.
As you remember, we got hit hard last year, had our orphanage wiped out, and many died and thousands were homeless. We are praying this does not happen this year.
Property update: The past month we were finally given the go ahead to begin to build our new church/school. However it will be several months before the building is ready to use so..............we have a tent, 40' by 60 'that just arrived this week and I am going to pick it up today.
We will be using this tent for school starting September 14th, for our 100 students, and on September 20th, we will be having our FIRST church service, at our new property, in the tent. This move has generated much excitement with our students and staff and congregation.
This move has brought many expenses that we are working on. Things such as:
bathroom being built
new desks for 100 students being built
22 pews for church
kitchen area for school
trash cans
two live in guards for our property
water for 100
water trucked in for toilet
black boards
expense of sending tent
expense of customs tax for tent
gas stove for cooking (no more charcoal)
office equipment for school director and
transportation for nearly 80 students, daily.
Along with over $3000 worth of school books.
Also, 3 new teachers bringing our school staff to a total of 19.
God has blessed us with most of the funds to get the above done; we are still about $3000 short so if you can help, please designate it to "property move."
As I shared, our pastor Jackie resigned from Victory Bible church. Our first service last week without him went well, as I preached. This week, we had fellowship night. We have had these once a month services in the past, this is the first one in nearly 3 years. What we do is start out the service with about 40 minutes of praise and worship. Then we broke the 250 people up into 8 groups. Each group had one of our staff as a leader.
The groups spent time introducing each other and getting to know each other. Each group had to sing their favorite praise song. (this was a hoot and a blessing)
We had a discussion question that each group spent about 15 minutes talking about then each group gave their thoughts on the discussion.
During this time, pastor Roger and myself passed out a sack lunch to each of the nearly 250 people who came. The lunch had a pack of cookies, ham sandwich, cold juice and a bag of chips, along with a toothbrush. The people were thrilled.
The children were in junior church doing their own thing, food for them also. What a great night but the best part is what happened later. One of our staff was sick and was not at church to lead his group. I asked my son, Claudy, to lead the group. Now, the first time I asked Claudy to translate for me in church, he broke into a sweat and said he could never speak in front of people. I kept at him and finally he began to translate for me and over time even began to introduce visitors.
When I asked him Saturday to lead this group, he said "yes." I then had the thrill of watching him lead his 25 or so people. He took charge and did a fantastic job. Later at home he came up to me and said "poppy, do you think you could send me to some type of college, to learn how to preach?" Wow, I was overwhelmed and said "I would sell both my kidneys to make that happen."
This week at church, we are showing a movie, the life of John. We have moved the service to 6pm so it will be dark when we show it. We will have 400+ for the movie.
Friday we took a 600 gallon water tank to the garbage dump and filled it with water. The people were so happy; they now have water every day. This is a new expense, about $80 per week so if anyone would like to help with this new expense and cover a week, I won't say no.
We also bought two baby beds for the Good Samaritan orphanage thanks to our friends in Washington. Pastor Jason, the babies and nanny's are happy.
Last Thursday I stood before nearly 60 young adults in Merjay at English class. I had the chance to share what being a follower of Christ was. For 45 minutes I shared. For the entire time, it was quiet, and every single eye was on me. As I spoke, I was nearly overwhelmed at what I was doing. To be able to do what the apostle Paul did, what Billy Graham did, what my father did, and what many of you do, is so awesome.
I remember thinking; I am fulfilling my purpose for life doing this and what an honor it was. I am confident that in this group there will be several young men and women who will become fully trained leaders, who will reach their village of Merjay, for Christ.
Time to go, thanks for reading this, thanks for partnering with us to reach Haiti for Christ, one life at a time. tominhaiti
